Stretch your mind beyond the bounds of reality with our creative writing classes.
ONE-A-DAY WRITEAMIN: (Limit 10) A new project every day. Those new to creative writing will learn a variety of games and brainstorming activities to access the weird, funny, creative parts of the brain. Write a poem about light bulb-obsessed monkey lawyers. Write a 1-page novel about your family’s trip to Mars last year. Write your life story in sidewalk chalk. Don’t be limited by paper – the world is your notebook! (period 1)
WRITING FOR CHANGE: ages 11-15 (Limit 10) Have you ever been passionate about something, but didn’t know how to share your passion with the world in a meaningful and impactful way? Well, you’ve come to the right place! Art gives us a lens through which we can explore the ways our stories intersect with social issues in the world around us. In this class, we will write stories, poems, articles, etc. about the issues that matter most to us as individuals and as a group. We will use what we’ve written as inspiration for creating original works of art of any and all kinds. Our goal is to share our art, but more importantly our stories, with the rest of the community in hopes of sparking greater discussions about the society we live in. (period 1)
PLAYWRITING: (Limit 10) This class will focus on writing short and long scripts. Writing words for other people to speak aloud takes a powerful and different type of creativity. Explore creating dialogue for advertisements, webisodes, film and plays. You get to choose the projects most intriguing to you, and we will work individually and collectively. On Festival Day, we will host a staged reading where your scenes can be shared with the world. (period 3)
WRITER’S WORKSHOP: (Limit 10) Look. We all have that one amazing idea: a novel, a comic, a play, a short story, a collection of poems. But with the crazy hustle and bustle of life, we don’t always have the time to get around to making that dream a reality. This class will be a chance to independently pursue a writing project of your choosing, driven by your interests. You will get brainstorming help, examples of other great writing to use as inspiration to help you, and revision suggestions from the counselor and other campers. Students should come with some idea of the type of project they want to tackle, though we can always hammer out the details in the first couple of days if you do not. Come join a community of writers and change the world with your words. (period 5)
BLOG ABOUT IT!: (Limit 10) Make your own blog and let the world know what’s on your mind! In this class you can post daily about whatever matters to you: fictional stories, three-ingredient recipes, current events, or even your own life. You want to make a blog about politics and cheesecake? Sounds great! What makes blogs so great is that the possibilities are limitless. You can customize the appearance and content of your blog, as well as post your own art, videos, music, or other creative creations. This class will teach you everything you need to know about blogging and prepare you for your life as an internet phenomenon! (period 6)
